Three public schools in Negros Oriental that were among those badly-affected by typhoon Sendong received a total of 542 books from the Robert B. and Metta J. Silliman Library.

Selection of the three recipient public schools was based on the extent of the damage of their libraries. The recipients are Tanjay Legislated High School and Tambacan Elementary School, both in Tanjay City, and Tubtubon Elementary School in the municipality of Sibulan.

Tanjay Legislated received 183 volumes on various topics. The donation to Tambacan composed of 136 children’s books and 66 textbooks, while the one for Tubtubon had 140 children’s books and 17 textbooks.

Silliman has been donating books which it has in its collection in multiple copies as part of its outreach activities. It also continues to be involved in other formal knowledge development partnerships which cover free book rentals and extension of library resources to public schools in Negros Oriental.

Four of these partnerships are with the SU-Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor in Michigan, the Philippine Dictionary Project founded by Nina Patawaran, the American Corners of the American Studies Resource Center with the US Embassy,, and the Knowledge for Development Center Nooks with the World Bank.
