“It was no junket.”
Officials of the Liga ng mga Barangay officials in Dumaguete defended their recent one-week Lakbay Aral to Manila, saying it was a visit to local government units where they learned new insights that can be replicated in their barangays.
Bunao Barangay Capt.and Liga President Lionel Banogon said the barangay officials who joined the trip will soon give their report.
The delegation from Dumaguete was composed of 24 barangay captains, 64 kagawads, four department heads, and a representative the City Mayor’s Office.
Aside from visiting local government units, they also attended a lecture on disaster preparedness and management.
Banogon said the Liga is expected to recommend to Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria the creation of task forces at the barangay level for the segregation of solid waste, through the materials recovery facilities.
He said Dumaguete City could easily replicate the program of Marikina in the disposal of solid waste, using a bio-reactor that operates all day to rapidly transform biodegrable wastes into composts and organic fertilizer.
Banogon also said the barangay officials also learned that to effectively help the environment, provisions of Republic Act 9003, or the Ecological Solid Waste Management program, must be strictly enforced, especially the segregation at source.
He also said that there is now a machine that can make foot blocks out of plastic waste. (SGR)
