Following its legal accreditation by way of an ordinance, the Liga ng mga Barangay Kagawad in Dumaguete City can now receive financial assistance from the city government.
Authored by Councilors Alan Gel Cordova and Michael Bandal, the ordinance institutionalizing the Liga ng mga Baranagay Kagawad provides an appropriation of P400,000 that can be earmarked to support its programs and activities subject to budgetary and Commission on Audit regulations.
Cordova said that the Liga ng mga Barangay Kagawad composed of 210 elected members must be empowered because while they are greater in number it also lacks financial and even moral support as an organization of barangay officials serving the grassroots.
Both Cordova and Bandal asserts that there is a need to “meaningfully empower the Liga to enhance their contribution to the political system and to the welfare of the city.” (PIO Dumaguete)
