Bicyclists from different bicycle groups in Dumaguete gathered early in the morning at the City Hall of Dumaguete last Tuesday Jan. 10, 2011 to register their bicycles officially.
The bicyclists were there before the City Treasurer’s Office, the place to go to register your bike in Dumaguete for P45.00.
Members of 350.org Negros Oriental, a youth-empowered local green group aiming to curb the global carbon dioxide emissions back to 350 parts per million (ppm) instead of the current 391.80 ppm, were the ones who facilitated this initiative.
The local bicyclists are united in the aim of prioritizing the legislation of bicycle-friendly laws in Dumaguete City. They registered their bikes as a symbol of solidarity on the part of our local government.
That morning, they decided to found PLAKA Dumaguete: an alliance carrying out objectives that promote accessible bicycling in Dumaguete City.
PLAKA Dumaguete hopes that the local government can help them address the need for a bicycle parking program in Dumaguete, as well as a bicycle lane program to boost local road safety.
PLAKA Dumaguete is reachable through its facebook group page of the same name.
As they [everyone involved] waited for more bicyclists to come for registering that morning under one of the trees outside City Hall, they were also able to do a reading of City Resolution No. 285, the Traffic Code of the City concerning bicycles.
City Resolution No. 285 has not been modified since 1978.
The different bicycle groups present were the Negros Oriental Biker’s Association (NOBA), ONE Bikers, the Silliman University Association of Biking Enthusiasts (SUABE), the Dumaguete Mountain Bikers (DUMB) and the DriveCARE bmx bikers.
Individual bicyclists were also there to add grace to the newly-christened movement.
