A high school student from a community high school in the town of Sta. Catalina has won the right to represent the Philippines in the Sixth ASEAN Quiz to be held in Vietnam in August.

John Vincent Derla, a student at the Emilio C. Macias II Memorial High School in Fatima, Sta. Catalina, was one of three contestants chosen to represent the country in the annual ASEAN Quiz. The other members of the Philippine team are Krstelle Claire Balolong of St. Albert School in Region I and Kyle Vincent Singson of the Pasay Science High School, representing the National Capital Region.

The national competition was held at PTV 4 in Quezon City last Thursday, which was participated by 17 contestants.

The contestants answered questions about all aspects of the Philippines and the 10 ASEAN-member states.

The Negros Oriental contestant was accompanied by his coach, Felda Gamo, and DepEd ICT Coordinator Adolf Aguilar.

A project of the ASEAN Committee on Culture & Information, the ASEAN Quiz aims to foster the spirit of healthy competition and friendships among ASEAN youth. People’s Television Network is the implementing agency of the project in partnership with the DepEd, Department of Foreign Affairs, Presidential Communication Operation Office, Philippine Information Agency, and the Philippine Broadcasting Service.
