Education Secretary Armin Luistro has expressed interest in the Student Handbook and Diary program of Bais City Mayor Karen Villanueva, which will soon be implemented in the city schools.
Luistro, accompanied by undersecretary Francisco Varela, were briefed on the said program by Mayor Karen, after they visited Bais City last Wednesday on a whistle stop en route to Negros Occidental. Luistro was in Negros Oriental since Tuesday to meet with provincial officials to discuss preparations for the hosting of the Palarong Pambansa in April.
Upon seeing a sample of the diary, Luistro noted that aside from recording the assignments for the day, students will also be made to record their daily diet. This sparked the interest of Sec. Luistro and suggested that body weight of grade school students should also be monitored. He further added that the habit of tooth brushing should be developed early on as a sound hygiene practice, among others.
Mayor Villanueva said her thrust to improve the educational system has been highlighted by the prudent utilization of the Special Education Fund, which was used to construct school buildings, speech laboratories and other school facilities as well as the employment of teacher aides to augment the local teaching force.
This was the second visit of both Sec. Luistro and Usec Varela to Bais City. They were also guests of Mayor Karen last year to attend the K to 12 Stakeholder’s Forum and the Teacher’s Forum.
Mayor Karen lauded the two DepEd officials for their support for Bais City’s programs. (PR)
