The Bureau of Fire Protection kicked off Wednesday its local celebration of Fire Prevention Month with a unity walk as a take off activity which was participated in by firemen, the City Police, city and barangay officials and other stakeholders.
Chief of Operations Sr. Fire Officer Dante Matugas disclosed safety flyers were distributed in fire-prone areas of the City to include barangays Calindagan and Looc, after which they coordinated with barangay captains for the conduct of lectures regarding fire prevention.
The awareness campaign is geared towards reducing, if not eliminating the possibility of fire incidents in the City.
Matugas enjoins Dumagueteños to make sure their house is intact when they reach home by unplugging all appliances before leaving the house, switching off all the lights, not leaving embers in the dirty kitchen, keeping matches away from children as well as combustible materials.
This developed as the fire sub station in barangay Daro will be commissioned starting Wednesday next week to respond to fire alarms around the vicinity, as they await for a new fire truck that was committed to the barangay by the national government.
According to Matugas, for a growing city like Dumaguete, the Bureau of Fire Protection needs at least four to five fire sub stations, even as it requires a considerable number of personnel and equipment.
In a related development, the BFP made sure all fire hydrants in Dumaguete are functioning through a coordination meeting with the Dumaguete City Water District.
During the inspection and testing, it was observed that the water pressure in the central district is strong enough to be able to supply firemen’s needs. (PNA/jfp/Juancho Gallarde)
