Runners advocating for peace. Running communities in Dumaguete City, composed of the Metro Dumaguete Roadrunners Club, the Dumaguete Adventure Runners & Striders (DARS), and other running enthusiasts, have been participating in the annual observance of National Peace Consciousness Month, which is also marked in other countries.
Peace-One-Day Run was initiated in 2006 as the first peace run in the Province; last year, the ‘I am for Peace’ Relay Run covered the northern and southern towns of Negros Oriental starting at midnight. Both were organized by the Provincial Peace and Order Council.
This year, the 2013 Run for Peace is a 65-kilometer ultramarathon, dubbed as the ONeUltra 65 which started 10pm of Saturday and is expected to end by 7am of Sunday, Sept. 22.
An ultramarathon is any distance beyond the 42-kilometer full marathon. The most common ultramarathon distance is 50 kilometers and 100 kilometers. Fifty kilometers is the distance from Dumaguete to Siaton, south of Negros Oriental.
The ONe Ultra 65: I Run for Peace is organized by the PPOC through the Negros Oriental Sports Development Program (NOSDEP), assisted by the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary headed by Cmdr Jonathan Lester Alerre, and ONE Rescue EMS headed by Dr. Kenneth Coo, DARS, MDRC, and MetroPost as media partner.
PPOC members assisting the event include the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office represented by Deputy Chief Alet Vertucio, and the AFP 302nd Brigade Army headed by Brig. Gen.Francisco M. Patrimonio.
The local government units of Dumaguete City, Sibulan, San Jose, Bacong, and Dauin headed by their respective Mayors provided security and medical assistance. (PR)
