Silliman University Mass Communication student Daniel Philip Mayoga won the gold medal in the McIntire Oratorical Contest, organized by the Overseas Students Fellowship, and the International Students Center.
In his oratorical piece, Mayoga said
The McIntire contest was started in 1913 as a public speaking event as a tribute to two Silliman pioneers: English professor Dr. Walter McIntire, and his wife Theater director Rebecca Berry-McIntire who served the Institute from 1902 to 1911.
In his book, Dr. David Sutherland Hibbard, Silliman’s first president who served from 1901 to 1930, acknowledged the champions of the McIntire Oratorical Contest through its early years: Mateo Occeña in 1913 (who later became secretary-general of the Presbyterian Mission), Evelio Javier in 1914, Guillermo Magdamo in 1915, Juan Alcazaren in 1916, Vicente Sinco in 1917 (who became the eighth president of the University of the Philippines, then founded Foundation University here in Dumaguete), Ignacio Debuque in 1918, Gregorio Imperial in 1919, Gerardo Florendo in 1920, Gerardo Armonio in 1921, Angel Espina in 1922, Lamberto Macias in 1923 (who went on to become Negros Oriental congressman), Ramon Ponce de Leon in 1924, Rosauro Gomez in 1925, and Jesus Perpiñan in 1926.
