The Silliman University leg of this year’s Marshall McLuhan Forum Series on Responsible Media will feature Jodesz Gavilan, Rappler investigative journalist and lead editorial researcher, on Feb. 19, 10 a.m. at the Audio-Visual Theater.
According to Carlo Figueroa, senior Public Affairs officer of the Embassy of Canada–Philippines, Gavilan was awarded the 2023 Marshall McLuhan fellowship for her “unique commitment to investigative journalism, to informing the public about decisions and policies that affect their lives in support of the public interest.”
Gavilan covers the human rights and impunity beats for Rappler, and its investigative arm, Newsbreak. She has also written in-depth reports on Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs, the International Criminal Court, and the UN Human Rights Council.
In her lecture at Silliman, Gavilan will discuss “Data and journalism: Utilizing open source and online research for human rights and investigative journalism“ with students and faculty members of communication schools in Dumaguete City.
A panel of reactors composed of local journalists will also share their insights on the topic during the forum.
Campus journalists from the universities in the University Town will also participate in a workshop with Gavilan in the afternoon.
The Canadian Embassy’s Marshall McLuhan Forum Series on Responsible Media aims to provide communication students and local media practitioners an opportunity to learn from an accomplished journalist.
The McLuhan Fellowship, launched in 1997, is named after Canadian communication theorist Marshall McLuhan.
For almost three decades now, the McLuhan Forum Series on Responsible Media is an annual highlight of SU Mass Com Week — composed of a series of events that enable its students to learn about and celebrate their field of practice. (Shay Du/KMC)
