Mental health has become a household term when the pandemic hit us.

What was once a neglected aspect of personal health has come to light as suicide cases in the Philippines rose by 25.7 percent in 2020 alone. It has drawn attention since Covid-19 related suicides are all over the social media platforms.

However, unknown to the majority, suicide has been one of the leading causes of deaths in the country. Exact reasons might be unclear but mental health issues characterized by anxiety and depression are believed to be the main culprit.

Fortunately, society has come to embrace mental awareness, and does not merely regard it as a subject of stigma anymore. Keep in mind that keeping track of mental health is equally important to maintaining the physical health.

Feeling sad?
It is normal to feel sad from time to time as we face unpleasant events in life. Losing your job, missing a loved one, or failing a test can be a cause of sadness.

But if a cup of your favorite coffee, a delicious meal, or a chat with someone makes you feel sad no more then you are probably just fine. When it is temporary and does not affect your daily life, it is said to be sadness and not depression.

Feeling down? Life does not always go as we planned. No matter how much effort and heart we put into things, mishaps happen. Bear in mind that a foolproof plan towards success does not exist. An excellent student might not get the highest score. Someone who graduated with flying colors might not get a job at first try. Diligent and productive workers might not get the promotion they supposedly deserve. From the littlest of things to matters of great importance, failure is inevitable every now and then.

Of course, you have every right to feel discouraged. But you can always bounce back with more vigor and passion in time. However, if the feeling stays with you, and affects every aspect of your life, that is a red flag.

Feeling empty? Stress from work or school environment can make you emotionally exhausted. You question yourself if it is even worth it.

Later, not caring at all becomes an option because it seems hopeless anyway. You are still a struggling student or employee. Instead, you want to go to an adventure, try something new, and take a breather.

People, ‘burn out’ welcomes you. You just want to get a life since responsibilities are putting too much weight on your shoulder. A short escape, not a life abandonment.

On the other hand, emotional emptiness related to depression is like filling a bottomless glass. You go on with your daily activities, complete tasks, and even achieve your goals but nothing else matters. Deep inside, you feel hollow, and emotions just pass through like water slipping through your fingers.

If you think that living seems pointless, stop. Talk with friends and family. Remember that you are loved.

The questions and answers provided neither come from a mental health professional nor does it intend to provide expert counselling. It only hopes to raise mental awareness, and encourage people to be mindful of personal emotional health, and of others.

After all, no man is an island.
