The MetroPost newspaper, the only Dumaguete newspaper to get a national award from the Philippine Press Institute or the national association of newspapers, has won another national award.
The MetroPost won the Best in Photojournalism award in the weekly category, one of five awards presented Friday during the Civic Journalism Community Press Awards at the Hotel Jen along Roxas Boulevard in Manila.
The Baguio Midland Courier took the awards for Best in Environmental Reporting, Best Editorial Page and Best Edited Community Newspaper. Cagayan de Oro’s Businessweek Mindanao also won the Best in Business and Economic Reporting award.
In the daily category, Sun Star Davao won the Best in Photojournalism and Best in Business and Economic Reporting awards. Sun Star Bacolod won the Best in Environmental Reporting Award, the Freeman won the Best Editorial Page award and Cebu Daily News won the Best Edited Community Newspaper award.
Speaking for all the awardees, Dumaguete MetroPost publisher Alex Rey Pal thanked the Philippine Press Institute as well as the judges and sponsors for recognizing the efforts of the community press.
“I know I speak for all the awardees when I say it’s nice to be recognized. We burn our midnight candles to come up with a newspaper of the highest standards and we’re glad someone noticed”, he said.
The National Press Forum and the Civic Journalism Community Press Awards was made possible with support from the Nickel Asia Corporation, Hotel Jen, PagCor, the Philippine Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, SM Investments Corporation, Land Bank, Phil Health, Ayala Group of Companies, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, Veterans Bank, Bases Conversion Development Authority and McDonald’s.
