The Dumaguete MetroPost has been named as a finalist in the Philippine Press Institute’s 2012 Civic Journalism Community Press Awards.
Ariel Hans Cervantes, PPI executive director, announced the names of the finalists after a meeting of the PPI Board last week.
The PPI, the national association of Philippine newspapers, holds a yearly contest which is open to all members. The MetroPost is the only newspaper from Dumaguete to be honored as a finalist in this year’s contest.
Cervantes said there are six weekly newspapers and 10 daily papers who were named finalists for this year’s awards. The winners will be announced during the awards program on June 14 as the highlight of the two-day 17th National Press Forum in Makati.
This is the third time for the MetroPost to be chosen as a finalist in this prestigious contest. In 2007, it was the only weekly newspaper that was chosen as the finalist in all five categories in the Visayas and Mindanao, where it eventually was awarded Best in Editorial Page.
To date, the MetroPost, which had its maiden issue in April 2000, is the only newspaper in Negros Oriental to ever receive a top award from the PPI.
