The Provincial government has reported 39 new deaths from COVID 19 in the past week.
Dr. Liland Estacion, assistant provincial health officer, said the mortalities from COVID 19, who were mostly elderly patients, were all unvaccinated individuals.
“This is proof that vaccines work,” Estacion told reporters in a rare Saturday morning media briefing.
A total of 491 mortalities in Negros Oriental since the pandemic started, giving a mortality rate of 2.7 deaths per 100 COVID patients.
She called on the public to encourage family members and friends, to get vaccinated. “We may still get COVID even if we are vaccinated, but we won’t get severe COVID,” she said.
While admitting that there have been instances where fully-vaccinated individuals died from COVID 19, she said these individuals died of co-morbidities.
Estacion also said that the government will start vaccinating 12-17-year-olds starting November 5. She said that based on guidelines from the Department of Health, priority will be given to those with co-morbidities, which have to be certified by a pediatrician or a doctor of family medicine.
