The National Anti-Poverty Commission lauded efforts of Dumaguete City and the province of Negros Oriental in giving importance and recognition to marginalized groups in the city as it celebrates People’s Week this week with several activities being supervised by the sectoral desk.
Joy Bacon of the Basic Sector Coordinating Unit of NAPC graced the opening ceremonies of People’s Week at the Quezon Park in Dumaguete City, along with Angelo Tiongson who represented Gov. Roel Degamo.
She said NAPC is happy to witness two local government units, recognizing the people’s participation in the development of the city and the province, to include vendors, the transport groups, farmers, fisherfolk, women sector, persons with disabilities, Indigenous Peoples, workers in the informal sector, formal labor, none government organizations including cooperatives.
Hundreds joined the parade this afternoon as the start of the activities marking the 14th PO week in the city.
Bacon said NAPC is doubly happy Dumaguete allotted the whole week for the celebration where they can showcase their products through the stalls provided by the city. She said these are people who really make a difference in the development of the city.
Bacon and two other companions from the NAPC central office said they were amazed by the tempura market at the portion of the boulevard.
Aside from the employment and income to the marginalized group of people, it is a tourist attraction and destination in itself.
The other activities for the PO week that coincides with activities lined up for the 68th charter anniversary of Dumaguete include a trade fair where products of peoples organizations are being showcased, a feeding program, parlor games with pig catching as the main event, and the highlight of which is a big medical mission on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2017.
Sectoral desk head Rey Laping said the medical mission will be jointly undertaken by the city headed by Mayor Felipe Remollo and the provincial government headed by Gov. Roel Degamo.
The city’s massage therapists, physical therapists and all those involved in extending medical services will see action during the medical mission together with the Magdegamo medical team at the Quezon Park.
The Perpetual Help Credit Cooperative Inc. will also donate medicines to the medical mission. (PNA)
