The Dumaguete branch of the National Museum of the Philippines celebrates its second anniversary on Monday, Nov. 25 with the launch of a temporary exhibit, as well as social media engagements with the public.

The exhibit will feature the clay artworks made by participants of clay workshops held last month at the museum premises, facilitated by Hemrod Duran and Kevin Cornelia.

The show, titled Shaped: An Exhibit on Hand-Built Clay, showcases the works of students from Foundation University, as well as Museum staff who used hand-building methods such as pinching, coiling, and slab-building to create the pieces.

The exhibit will run until Jan. 31, 2025.

The National Museum of the Philippines-Dumaguete is also hosting a trivia game on its social media platforms that centers on its permanent exhibitions and public programs, with winners given prizes.

It is also hosting a Bisita-Bisita sa NMP-Dumaguete promo, where the first two guests registered for the day at the Museum, also win prizes.

In 2022, the National Museum opened a regional branch at the Old Dumaguete Presidencia, in a ceremony that included the unveiling of the marker declaring the building as an Important Cultural Property.

The property, built in 1937, was designed by the renowned Filipino architect Juan Arellano.

Since its inception, NMP-Dumaguete has been committed to becoming a repository for cultural artifacts and natural heritage specimens for the whole of Negros Island. The Museum has since embarked on an ongoing information and education campaign directed towards local schools and the public transportation sector.

It has also facilitated the restoration of the centuries-old campanario near the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria, and has spearheaded multiple public programs engaging the public with events centering on local art, culture, and heritage.

The staff of NMP-Dumaguete said they aim to engage the public more through various programs and exhibitions, and will continue its mandate as an educational institution for the people of Negros Island.

This follows provisions from Section 11 of Republic Act 11333, also known as An Act Strengthening the National Museum of the Philippines, Repealing for the Purpose RA No. 8492, otherwise Known as the National Museum Act of 1998—which states that the NMP shall take steps to establish regional museums in every administrative region of the Philippines beyond the National Capital Region.

For more information about the programs of the National Museuum-Dumaguete, guests are invited to visit the social media platforms via @NMPDumaguete on both Facebook and Instagram. Interested parties can also contact the Museum through [email protected], or (035) 300-0637 or 0920-947-8809. (Renz Torres/NMP)
