The JLSS is a scholarship program of the DOST-SEI under the Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994, the Fast-Tracked S&T Scholarship Act of 2013, and the Merit Scholarship Program.

Qualifiers of this scholarship program will get to enjoy a two to three year S&T scholarships of their existing S&T priority courses. The implementation of the JLSS supports the goal of the DOST-SEI to substantially increase the number of scientists and engineers needed to boost economic productivity and knowledge creation in the country.

Meanwhile, the R.A. 10612 supports the execution of Section 8 of the K to 12 Law by providing a pool of scholar-graduates which can competently teach science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in the basic education.

Of the total passers, 17 qualified for the scholarships under R.A. 10612, four qualified under RA 7687 while three passed for the Merit program. This school year’s passers represent about 15 percent of the total 158 examinees in the Province who took the exam conducted on Oct. 16 nationwide. Over 7,000 examinees took the qualifying test, yielding a passing rate of about 31 percent.

Qualifiers will be entitled to subsidy in tuition and other school fees, monthly living allowance, book allowance, among others upon the school year opening in June 2017.

There are also four qualifiers who are currently studying at priority schools at NORSU and at Silliman but who not originally from Negros Oriental: Mayven Cielo, Alyzza Rose Ledesma, Jeremiah Tubongbanua, and Mary Angelica Villocino.

The DOST Negros Oriental Provincial S&T Center has tentatively scheduled the Qualifiers’ Orientation and Contract Signing on the fourth week this month. (DOST Media Service)
