A total of 36 students enrolled in the different higher education institutions in Negros Oriental qualified to be this year’s recipients of the Department of Science & Technology — Science Education Institute’s Junior Level Science Scholarships.
Foundation University has one qualifier, Silliman University has 13 qualifiers, while Negros Oriental State University has 22 qualifiers.
This year’s result is a 277 percent increase in the number of qualifiers when compared last year. In 2021, the Province only had 13 qualifiers for the scholarship program.
DOST Negros Oriental welcomed the qualifiers in a virtual event that featured discussions on the provisions of the scholarship and the scholar’s duties and responsibilities.
“The DOST-SEI Junior Level Science Scholarships are given only to deserving students. We hope this year’s batch of scholars will continue the tradition of excellence shown by those who came before you. May you prove to be worthy of the government’s confidence in your intellectual abilities, mental toughness, and moral strength. After all, you will be the future pillars of our economy and society, especially in the domain of science, technology, and innovation,” DOST Provincial Director Atty. Gilbert Arbon told the new batch of scholars, who were joined by their parents/guardians.
“I feel grateful for having qualified for this program. I feel relieved because I’ve been wanting to help my family in paying for my expensive tuition fees,”said Ain Aijeleth Jamin Agir, a BS Medical Technology student at Silliman University.
Due to the pandemic, their documents were processed through the Electronic Scholarship Application System.
“DOST-SEI employed data analytics and proxy indicators [to determine the scholars],” said Marjorie Solon, DOST NegOr scholarship coordinator.
The JLSS is an undergraduate scholarship program of DOST-SEI that aims to finance the education of talented and deserving students in their third year of college, pursuing degree programs in the areas of science and technology.
