The League of Provinces of the Philippines (LPP) approved Thursday a resolution supporting the request of Governors Roel Degamo and Alfredo Maranon Jr. for the inclusion of Negros Island as one of the federated regions of the country under the proposed federal system of government.
The LPP met for an expanded national executive board meeting at the Shangri-La Hotel in Makati City and discussed the resolution of the two Negros governors to create the Negrosanon Federated Region.
Marañon told the LPP Board that the two provinces achieved a lot in the one year and a half that they were united under the Negros Island Region.
He also cited the Commission on Audit‘s high ranking of Occidental and Oriental among the provinces in terms of net worth, the Bureau of Internal Revenue’s reports on the big revenues collected in the NIR, and the National Competitive Council’s report on the competitiveness of the cities in the island.
The Governors unanimously approved the resolution even without looking at a powerpoint presentation, saying they did not need convincing, an official from Negros Occidental told Bacolod reporters.
In their resolution, the two Governors said Negros Occidental and Oriental are the only Provinces situated in one island that belong to separate administrative regions — Western and Central Visayas.
The resolution further said that the merger of the two Negros provinces into a single region has been envisioned by their leaders for the past 25 years to accelerate development within the island.
