Minimum wage earners in Negros Oriental can expect an P18.00 wage increase by January next year after the Regional Tripartite Wages & Productivity Board approved the adjustment last week.
Philip Tan, representative of the business sector in the Wages & Productivity Board, told reporters in Cebu that the wage increase was approved after they heard the petition of the labor sector and the position of the management sector, taking into consideration poverty incidence and geography.
Tan explained that the wage increase will be in two tiers. Businesses with at least 10 employees are to give an adjustment of P18.00, while those employing at least nine staff workers in a micro business will pay P10.00 more.
Non-agriculture wage earners for companies with nine or less employees can expect to receive P343.00, while those in companies with at least 10 employees stand to receive P356.00.

Meanwhile, the new rate by next year for those employed as house helpers (kasambahay) in Region 7 (Negros Oriental, Siquijor, Bohol, Cebu) will be between P4,500 to P5,000 per month.
The National Wages Productivity Commission will review the new rates, and endorse it to Labor Sec. Silvestre Bello III.
After Bello signs it, it will go back to the RTWPB for publication. The new rate will take effect 15 days after publication.
The law also allows certain companies to file for exemptions, depending on the size of their business.
They can adjust the prices of their products and services, so they can apply the increase in their workforce’s salaries, Tan said. (Juancho Gallarde)
