The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) unveiled on Thursday, February 2, 2011, a historical marker for “Jose Rizal sa Dumaguete” in Dumaguete City, in celebration of Rizal@150th, the program will start at 3p.m. at the Quezon park.
The unveiling ceremony is being organized by NHCP in cooperation with the City Government of Dumaguete, according to Jessica Layumas, of the City Tourism Office.
Layumas said, the marker states: Jose Rizal sa Dumaguete – nagwakas ang pagkakatapon ni Rizal sa Dapitan, Mindanao nang pahintulutang manilbihan bilang siruhano sa hukbong Espanyol sa Cuba. Nilisan ang Dapitan patungong Maynila, kasama sina Josephine Bracken, ang kapatid na si Narcisa, at iba pa, lulan ng barkong España, hatinggabi ng 31 Hulyo 1896. Pansamantalang tumigil sa Dumaguete ang barko, Bukang-Liwayway, 1 Agosto. dito nakipagkita si Rizal kina Gobernador Emilio Regal, punong lalawigan ng Negros Oriental, at Faustino Herrero Regidor, dating kamag-aral. Kinahapunan, inopera sa mata ang kapitan ng konstabularya ng lalawigan. Nilisan ang Dumaguete muling sakay ng España, ika-10 ng gabi ng araw ring iyon.
With, the NHCP Executive Director Ludovico D. Badoy and Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria will lead the unveiling ceremony. The marker shall be officially turned over to the City Government of Dumaguete. City Administrator William E. Ablong and Acting Deputy Exec. Dir. Carminda R. Arevalo, will stand as witnesses during the signing of the Certificate of Transfer of the historical marker.
The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote and preserve Philippine history and heritage through research, information dissemination, conservation, including the marking of historic sites and structures, and the maintenance and administration of national shrines, monuments and landmarks.
