The local government unit of Dumaguete City is eyeing other options for a sanitary landfill site as initial discussions for the facility in nearby Valencia town may not push through.
Dumaguete Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo and Valencia Mayor Edgar Teves had previously announced plans of establishing a common sanitary landfill at a sparsely populated or even an un-populated area in Valencia.
The City created a Technical Working Group to look at other possibilities in the event the Valencia LGU will not push ahead with an earlier plan.
The idea that was originally floated was for the other nearby LGUs such as Dumaguete, Bacong and Sibulan to bring their garbage to the Valencia sanitary landfill for a fee.
However, City Information Officer Dems Demecillo told the MetroPost that the plan has problems with “social acceptability” with Valencia residents who are not keen on having the sanitary landfill in their town.
He said the Valencianons only wanted to use the sanitary landfill, if ever the LGU would establish one, for their own garbage.
Another possible site for the sanitary landfill for Dumaguete is being eyed in the City but Demecillo said it is still too early to disclose the location.
Meanwhile, Mayor Remollo has reiterated his administration’s efforts to build a sanitary landfill as early as possible as mandated by law and because the open dumpsite in Candauay is already outlawed. (With report from Judy Partlow/PNA)
