The Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce & Industry Inc. scored a historic back-to-back victory by winning two major awards during the 41st Philippine Business Conference & Expo held Oct. 25-27 at the Marriott Hotel Grand Ballroom in Pasay City.

The NOCCI, led by President Edward Du, won the Most Outstanding Chamber Award in the Visayas, and the Most Outstanding Chamber Award in the Philippines.

“It was a big surprise, and we are very happy that the Philippine Chamber of Commerce & Industry acknowledged the hard work that we put into the Chamber these past few years,” Du told the MetroPost in a post-award interview.

He said the awards may have been given because of NOCCI’s involvement with practically all sectors in Negros Oriental, from information technology, livelihood, small and medium enterprise development, education, conflict mediation, and many other fields.

NOCCI had also taken an active role in promoting the concept of the Negros Island Region in the last two years.

“I am proud of our team in the NOCCI which has given no less than its 100 percent support to the organization, and to our programs which has really allowed the NOCCI to become ‘the voice of the business sector,’” Du said.

NOCCI’S beginnings date back in the early 1990s with the Province’s businessmen, headed now President Emeritus Ernesto C. Quiamco as its first president.

Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria also served as president before his election as City Mayor.

NOCCI is run by a dedicated staff of three, composed of John Jalandoni as executive director; and Christy Mae Aldion and Syndey Uy.

Its trustees include Engr. Gregorio Uymatiao Jr. (GLU Construction) as vice president for finance; Francisco Martinez (Consolidated Lending Corp.) as vice president for administration; Danford Sy (New Bian Yek Commercial) as vice president for membership; Tyrone Ramas-Uypitching (Duplamilco) as treasurer; Atty. Florian Alcantara (Raw Brown Sugar Milling Co. Inc.) as internal auditor; Atty. Florence Tangente (Obdulia Business Inn) as Board secretary; and members of the Board: Edward Uy (Joebon Marketing), Alex Rey Pal (Unitown Publishing House/MetroPost), Gilbert Uymatiao (Uymatiao Trading), Arthur Chua (Lee Plaza), Marciano Kho (MK Trading), Roy Cang (Cang’s Inc./Bethel Guest House), and Dante Matiao (Maayo Shipping Inc.).
