The Board of Regents of the Negros Oriental State University (NORSU) has decided to hold a special session with commissioners of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in Manila in the coming days to tackle the closure of the College of Maritime Education (CME) of the state university.
Dumaguete City Councilor Nilo Sayson, who is at the same time a member of the Board of Regents, disclosed the special session will be presided over by CHED commissioner Patricia Licuanan.
Initially, the board has requested for a reconsideration of the closure order, Sayson reported.
Upon inquiry and verification, Sayson said he learned the CME has all the structures, facilities and equipment required by law for a maritime school to operate, except the master’s degree qualifications for members of the faculty, which can be corrected.
Sayson suggested giving the faculty a time frame within which to acquire their master’s degrees, because completion of academic requirements is not enough in the absence of thesis.
He is mulling the idea for NORSU to spend for the masteral requirements of CME faculty and for them to sign contracts where conditions are stipulated. (PNA)
