The Board of Regents of Negros Oriental State University announced Friday that effective immediately, the University will be headed by its new President Dr. Joel P. Limson.
Limson garnered majority of the votes during Friday’s election by the Board of Regents which was held in Manila.
Dr. Limson immediately took his oath of office before the Board of Regents, presided by Dr. Patricia Licuanan, chairperson of the Commission on Higher Education.
In a phone interview, 3rd District Cong. Pryde Henry Teves said he participated in the elections as a representative of Pasig City Cong. Roman Romulo.
Other members of the Board of Regents who were present during the elections were Dr. Vivian Estaquio representing Sen. Pia Cayetano, National Economic Development Authority Director Efren Carreon, Science & Technology Director Rowen Gelonga, private sector representatives Ricarte Santos and Atty. Marcelino Maxino, alumni representative Nilo Sayson, faculty representative Dr. Elsa Bulado, and NORSU Student Government leader Vince Villanueva.
OIC President Dr. Peter Dayot was also present during the election but was not part of the voting process.
According to Congressman Teves, President Limson got an overwhelming vote from the Board, and was “virtually Number 1 in all of the five qualifications” set by CHED. He expressed confidence in the new President, saying he has “high expectations” of Dr. Limson. Teves said Congressman Romulo’s vote for an “outsider” (non-NORSU-based) candidate would help “diffuse the heavy factionalism within the [NORSU] system”.
One of Limson’s big achievements in his academic career was earning for Negros Iloilo College an ISO (International Organization for Standardization) qualification within a two year timeframe.
Dr. Limson replaces the former NORSU president Dr. Don Vicente Real who was removed from office on charges filed against him, including alleged grave misconduct, dishonesty, falsification of public/official documents, and gross dishonesty.
Dr. Limson is expected to report to NORSU in Dumaguete on Monday, Jan. 11, Teves added. (PNA)
