The Volleyball Varsity Team of Negros Oriental State University, manned by Mart Jason Tubil and John Michael Reg Acain, won the silver medals in the Unigames held Oct. 24-30 in Bacolod City, putting NORSU in 2nd place, next to Southwestern University. Holy Cross Davao College won 3rd.
Ten colleges and universities from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao competed. Only NORSU represented Negros Oriental in beach volleyball.
Tubil and Acain are both Business students.
In Dumaguete, the NORSU Tigers varsity basketball team also won the silver medal in the recently-concluded 3rd Season of the School Sports Association of Negros Oriental (SSANO) basketball tournament held Nov. 1.
It was a neck-to-neck battle for the Tigers against Asian College’s Lightnings, with their final scores: 86-83 (Game 1), 54-62 (G2) and 60-64 (G3).
The basketball championship game was held at the Macias Sports & Cultural Complex. Other participating schools were Silliman University (3rd place), Foundation University, Negros Maritime College, Colegio de Santa Catalina de Alejandria, AMA Computer College, and St. Paul University of Dumaguete.
“NORSU is currently trying to build up a reputation to carve a niche in the world of sports,” said Dinno Depositario, NORSU consultant for basketball operations.
Because of the school’s massive population, Depositario said corporate sponsorship can be easily acquired. “So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Sports and Athletics will be a focus of the University’s plans and programs in the coming years.”
Currently, NORSU is being sponsored by Toby’s Sports Manila and Bacolod, Wilson, and Michael Jan Solon of Sugar Hills Agricultural Corp. (Joy Perez)
