Norsunians top statistics competition

Students from Negros Oriental State University topped the 24th Philippine Statistics Quiz in its recent search for young statistics whizzes in the Province.

Khryss Dominic Aca-ac, a freshman college student of NORSU, was adjudged the provincial winner in the recently-conducted PSQ.

John Nikko Ramacho and Gregin Bandoquillo, placed 2nd and 3rd winners, also freshmen of NORSU.

The three students bested 21 other contestants from the seven colleges and universities in Dumaguete . Each school fielded three contestants.

Provincial Statistics Officer Ariel Fortuito of the Philippine Statistics Authority said the three provincial winners represented Negros Oriental in the regional level PSQ on Nov. 10 in Cebu City.

Fortuito said the PSQ is a contest designed to test college freshmen students on their knowledge and application on statistics.

Aca-ac, Ramacho and Bandoquillo received P1,000, P700, and P500, respectively, and a trophy each.

The NORSU contestants were coached by Normina Batucan.

This year’s contestants participated in the provincial elimination from different universities and colleges including Silliman University, Foundation University, St. Paul University, Asian College of Science & Technology, AMA Computer College, and STI College.

The 24th PSQ is conducted nationwide among freshmen students enrolled in colleges and universities in the 17 regions of the country.

At stake for the winners in the PSQ National Finals are cash and trophies, among others. All regional champions will also be awarded during the National Finals with a PSQ medal and a certificate of recognition.

The Philippine Statistics Quiz is an annual contest which started in 1992, and has been endorsed by the Commission on Higher Education since 1994. (MBCN/JCT/PIA7- NegOr)
