Four farmers believed to be members of the New People’s Army, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, were arrested early Friday by soldiers of the 11th Infantry Battalion in Sitio Maraja, Barangay Lamogong in Manjuyod, Negros Oriental.

The suspects were identified as Rea Casuyon Casido, 35, married; Teodor Academia Casido, 49, married; Danny Academia Casido, 41, married; and Venancio Acabal Cadeliña, 60, married, all residents of Sitio Maraja, a report from the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office said.

The four were arrested at about 3 a.m. as elements of the Alpha Company of the 11IB, led by Cpl. Benjamin B. Descotido, were conducting patrol and clearing operations in the area in relation to the June 23 encounter between government troops and suspected NPA members in Barangay Bantolinao in Manjuyod.

In that weekend encounter, an Army soldier and a suspected NPA member were killed while two other government troopers were wounded.

While the 11IB troops were patrolling the area, they spotted the four suspects who allegedly fled after seeing them, the police report said.

The soldiers put up a chase and apprehended them for questioning, after which they recovered allegedly from the suspects’ possession a number of explosives and ammunition.

The recovered items include two rifle grenades, two hand grenades, alleged subversive documents, six 30-rounds KG9 magazines, one 20-rounds KG-9 magazine, 90 rounds of live ammunition of caliber 9mm, a pair of binoculars, T-shirts printed with “PKP50” and “CPP 50”, backpacks, and other personal belongings.

The suspects are now under the custody of the Manjuyod Police Station pending the filing of charges against them for violation of Republic Act 9516, amending provisions of Presidential Decree 1866 on the illegal/unlawful possession, manufacture, dealing in, acquisition, or disposition of firearms, ammunition, or explosives.
