Col. Manuel Ochotorena, commander of the 302nd Brigade based in Tanjay City, Negros Oriental, said the bodies of the slain soldiers have been recovered while the two wounded militiamen are undergoing treatment at the Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital. However, he did not reveal the identities of those killed or wounded, pending notification of the next of kin.
He said the ambush was staged as the militiamen were walking to Sitio Casingan from their detachment in Sitio Candalanon, also of barangay Trinidad, to check on reports that communist insurgents had killed a resident of that sitio.
Barangay Trinidad is about 18 kilometers from the national highway.
Ochotorena said that the 11th Infantry Battalion, under Lt. Col. Ramil Bitong, has sent troops to barangay Trinidad to pursue the attackers.
