Families from across the community gathered at the Siit mangrove conservation area for a conservation camp organized by Endangered Species International in partnership with CMA CGM, a French cargo shipping company that funds conservation advocacies.
Through a series of interactive activities in the field, the event aimed to teach children about the critical role the ocean and mangroves play in our ecosystem and in our daily lives.
Despite an unexpected rain, the field camp continued with enthusiasm. Organizers quickly adapted by moving some outdoor activities indoors, ensuring that the children remained engaged and excited throughout the day.
The camp featured activities like yoga for mindfulness, creative expression exercises, sustainable seed bag-making from banana leaves, and educational tours in the mangrove forest.
Each activity was designed to foster a love for nature and conservation among the young participants.
The primary goal of the conservation camp was to help children understand the different species of mangroves, and the importance of planting them in the right conditions for them to grow and thrive.
The organizers also emphasized making learning enjoyable for the children.
Parents reported that their kids were especially enthusiastic during the boardwalk tour, where they identified various mangrove species by examining their roots and leaves.
“It’s important for parents to continue exposing their kids to nature so they will appreciate it more. Because when they appreciate it, they will protect it,” said Tonya Alviola, one of the event organizers. “I’m really grateful to the parents for bringing their children here. Even with the rain, their energy and enthusiasm never wavered.”
Beyond the educational aspect, the activities also instilled a sense of responsibility and connection to the environment among the young attendees. Organizers said they hope that the children, inspired by what they learned, will carry these lessons into their daily lives, and advocate for the protection of natural resources.
The event was made possible through the dedicated partners, facilitators, volunteers, and parents.
Organizers are planning weekly ocean conservation camps to continue the important task, and inspire more young people to become champions of the ocean.
