Congratulations… as an ordinary citizen who dreams of a better city and a better country, I have 10 pieces of unsolicited advice to share with you. These stem from a basic question a leader must ask himself: What kind of a leader should I be?

Here goes:

1. Be a servant-leader. A leader must first be a servant. Live to serve and seek the highest joy of those you serve. Be laser-focused on the welfare of people. Do not be power-hungry; instead, share that power to empower others. Help people develop their potential so they can be positive and productive citizens of the community. Consider the needs of others above your own. Interact with the people at their level. Listen to them, affirm their dreams, validate their concerns.

2. Don’t let the position go over your head. Be humble and serve with humility and integrity. You might think that the people were the ones who put you in that position but in the whole scheme of things, it was God who put you there.

3. Begin with the end in mind. Leadership is not about making a name for yourself. It is about creating a legacy that inspires people to serve, to dream dreams for their family and their community, and to play an active role in community building and transformation for this generation and the next. What kind of legacy would you want to leave behind when everything is said and done?

4. Don’t forget the poor and the marginalized. Prioritize them. They are the ones who need help the most. Think about them when you think about programs and solutions. Don’t give them the crumbs just because they are poor. Create programs that can lead them out of poverty. Honor them and give them the “best seat in the house” like you would to someone influential or rich. Go the distance for them.

5. Don’t settle for status quo or mediocrity. Strive for excellence in everything you do. Innovate! Rethink governance and public service without jeopardizing your core values, and the integrity of your office. Evaluate your existing programs, and rethink the way you run your community projects. Innovate to produce creative ideas and services from those who follow your lead. Come up with sustainable solutions for your people so they can have a better life.

6. Surround yourself with positive-minded and intelligent people who can sharpen you and help you become a great leader. Don’t be intimidated by people who are better than you. Keep them close and learn from them.

7. Be accountable, and a man above reproach. Politics in the Philippines is dirty. Whether you like it or not, people may have lumped you with other leaders who are corrupt. Be different. Be a promise-keeper. Do not put yourself in a compromising situation. Be a man of integrity. Be transparent. To be all these, you must be accountable to someone you trust who can speak into your life, counsel you, and help you stay the course.

8. Keep learning. Read. Study. Learn. Re-learn. Attend conferences that will increase your knowledge, and sharpen your skills in public service.

9. Take time to rest. And continue to take your wife and your family on dates. They are your main support. Don’t forget them as you serve the people in your community.

10. Above all, don’t forget our God. Surrender your life to Him. Read His Word. Get to know Him better. Pray to Him daily, and seek His guidance and counsel. Put your trust in Him for He is your source of wisdom, strength, and comfort. He is your shield and protection. You will never go astray if you put Him first in your life and follow His lead.

Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. – Isaiah 41:10

We love you, and we are proud of you and what you have become. Congratulations once again! God bless you.
