A successful hotelier in Oman has given P50,000 to Foundation University to help build a bigger Balay sa Alumni.
Rose Fabruada-Daher (FUHS ’77), outstanding alumni awardee for 2012 in the field of Corporate Business Management, made the donation during her visit to Acting President Dr. Eva Melon, and the officers of the FU Alumni Association Inc. last week.
The alumni hostel, a project of the FU Alumni Association Inc., will replace the existing Balay sa Alumni, and will be located on top of a four-storey building that will also replace the existing High School building at the FU North Campus.
This will be part of a multi-million-peso facelift of the North Campus, as the University gears up to accept more students in the coming years.
The hostel will have 11 bedrooms equivalent to the bedrooms of five-star hotels, where FU alumni may stay at pension house- rates.
Daher said she made the donation in grateful recognition of what Foundation University has done for her. Her education turned this former cigarette vendor at the Dumaguete Public Market into the proprietress/CEO and assistant executive for Al-Reef Lebnani LLC (Dolphin Hotel & Al-Reef Al-Lebnani Restaurant, Sweets & Bakery) in Muscat, Oman.
Daher also promised to add another P50, 000 to cover the cost of one hostel room, which will be named in her honor.
FU Alumni Director Maybelle Cabcaban said the next goal of the FUAA is to raise scholarships to fund the studies of academically- qualified but financially- challenged students.
She said some members of the FUAA had initial discussions with Daher, and when finalized, the program will be called the Rose Fabruada- Daher Scholarship for Business Administration/Accountancy or Hotel & Restaurant Management.
Dr. Charlotte Carino, president of the FUAA Inc., encouraged alumni to contribute toward this project. “You don’t have to be a millionaire to be able to give,” she said. “No amount is too small, either. It’s the act of giving, and the recognition of the University’s role in the life of our alumni that counts most.” (Paul Edward Bajas)
