The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency here is set to destroy the illegal drugs presented as evidence of the cases that are decided by the Regional Trial Courts in Negros Oriental.
This is to eliminate the misconceptions on recycling or re-selling of drugs, said PDEA agent-in-charge Gladys Grace Cruz in a meeting of the Provincial Anti-Drug Abuse Council.
Under Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, all courts are required to destroy evidence after a trial against an arrested drug dealer is completed.
“We are in the phase of getting the consolidated list for the destruction of drugs from the Regional Trial Courts and the PDEA chemist would check it to finalize the schedule of burning of the drugs,” Cruz said.
The burning of illegal and expired drugs will be done in a crematorium.
Cruz also disclosed that the Vallehermoso Detention Center is the only jail facility in the Province that has been drug-cleared.
All other facilities in the Province are still in the process of ongoing validation, Cruz said.

Meanwhile, PDEA together with other law enforcement agencies, has conducted 42 anti-drug operations in October with nine high value targets arrested and 32 cases filed.
For the barangay drug clearing efforts, four barangays in Canlaon City are cleared recently by the regional oversight committee.
So far, of the 557 barangay in the Province, a total of 69 barangays only are cleared of illegal drugs and recently, 29 barangays submitted its documents for validations, said Cruz.
A barangay can only be declared free of illegal drug activities if it passes the parameters that illegal drug is no longer available in the village.
Also, the villages must not only be free of illegal drugs but it must have officials and activities that would ensure the maintenance of the cleared status. (jct/PIA7 NegOr)
