The Department of Science & Technology-Negros Oriental, in partnership with the Local Disaster Risk- Reduction & Management Division, the Provincial Planning & Development Office, and the DOST Philippine Institute of Volcanology & Seismology, recently conducted a comprehensive forum on GeoRiskPH and solutions for Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System (REDAS).
The forum brought together 42 representatives from the City and Municipal Disaster Risk-Reduction & Management Offices of various local government units across the Province, members of the Provincial DRRM Council, and the Provincial Geographic Information System unit.
GeoRiskPH is a set of information-sharing platforms and protocols focused on hazards, exposure, and other risk-related data, created by GeoRisk Philippines, a multi-agency initiative. While REDAS is a software originally designed to simulate earthquake hazards, such as ground shaking, and to compute its impacts in terms of physical damage, casualties, and economic loss. Its application, however, has expanded beyond earthquake hazard and impact assessment, as the software now incorporates multi-hazard maps, including those for floods, storm surges, and rain-induced landslides.
A comprehensive training program on the use of both disaster risk management tools that could enhance the DRRM capacity of the Province is in the pipeline for 2025. (DOST NegOr PR)
