Tabok, a film about a young boy who painstakingly persevered to go to school despite his economic condition, won the most number of awards, including Best Festival Picture, at the DepEd Dumaguete AngChada Awards. The amateur film bagged four awards, including Best Festival Director (John Rey Manila), Best Sound Editing, and Best Musical Score. It bested eight other entries participated by various public secondary schools in Dumaguete City.

In the acting tournament, Piapi High School showed its dominance by harvesting six trophies of the nine categories including Best Stage Production in a Scene Study, Best Director (Marie Fe F. Gallardo and Arlyn D. Eullaran), Best Theater Actor (Junrick Cimafranca), Best Sound Effects, Best Production Design, and Best Theatrical Make-up. Acting tournament coach was Marie Fe F. Gallardo.

Seven secondary schools sent three performers to act a scene adaptation from the William Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream. The performers used code switching either by phrase, words, or sentence in English, Cebuano-Visayan, Filipino, and Spanish as medium of language. The play followed the Brechtian way of mounting a play (no spectacle or props needed).

The awards night was attended by Gov. Roel Degamo, City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria, City Councilors Manny Arbon and Joe Kenneth Arbas, and DepEd Dumaguete key personnel led by Dr. Ramir B. Uytico, schools division superintendent.

It is a culmination of the series of activities launched by DepEd Dumaguete and the City government in its quest to increase the academic performance of school children through the integration of culture and the arts in the curriculum. (Claude Sun/Piapi High School)
