Philippine Sports Commissioner for the Visayas Mon Fernandez opened the seven-day Little League Philippine series (April 6-12) in a simple ceremony at the Quezon Park. This is the first time that the City of Dumaguete hosting the series which will conclude on Wednesday. Fernandez stresses that sports ensures a healthy citizenry.
Baseball and softball teams from around the country including powerhouses Tanauan, Marikina and ILLAM are currently competing against the newly formed Dumaguete City team for the right to represent the country to the Little League Asia-Pacific and ultimately the World Series in the United States of America.
Little League PH has three categories: Major, Junior and senior for baseball (boys) and softball (girls).
Mayor Felipe Antonio “Ipe” Remollo asked the public to watch the games for free at Silliman Ballfield, Perdices Coliseum and RUSI Ballfield and cheer for their preferred teams, particularly, the newly-born Dumaguete City.
Organizers of Little League stress that the tournament teach our young and local athletes the virtues of discipline, sportsmanship and excellence. Promising athletes are often discovered in the course of the competition and offered scholarship by major universities in the National Capital Region assuring them and their family better chances to improve their lives.
Mayor Remollo’s enthusiasm to host events like Little League, Philippine Archery Cup and the Dumaguete Dragon Boat Challenge, held in the same week, is part of his administration’s push to make Dumaguete the next sports tourism destination of choice in this part of the country. (City PIO)
