Rear Admiral Edmund C. Tan, a valedictorian of the Negros Oriental State University High School (then the East Visayan School of Arts & Trades) in 1973, who later obtained his military degree from the Philippine Military Academy as a member of the Mapitagan Class in 1980, was sworn into office as the 24th Commandant of the PCG by President Aquino on Jan. 24.
Tan worked his way up the PCG heirarchy, having commander several operating units including four Coast Guard Districts.
Among his distinguished assignments are as field commander for Intelligence in Central and Eastern Visayas, as well as being the CGS Commander in Roxas and Bacolod cities, where both stations were adjudged the Most Outstanding Coast Guard Stations during his incumbency in 1994 and 1996 respectively.
