Sr. Supt. Dionard Carlos, OIC provincial police director of Negros Oriental, has described the murder incidents in Negros Oriental as already “alarming”.

According to him, the Philippine National Police in the province has recorded a total of 19 murder cases in the province for the month of October alone.

Sr. Supt. Carlos had presented to the members of the Provincial Peace and Order Council Tuesday afternoon during its regular council meeting on the crime statistics of the province.

That’s two percent of the total crime volume, he said.

Though the total number of crime incidents in October this year is less than that of last year for the same month, still with 19 murder cases, it is a cause for alarm, Carlos added.

The provincial police director disclosed he has directed his men to dissect and identify where in the province these murder cases are recorded.

Carlos further disclosed that he has called the attention of Supt. Jovito Atanacio, the police chief of Dumaguete City, the capital of Negros Oriental, and asked him how he will address these incidents.

Police records show that in Dumaguete City, three shooting incidents were recorded in October and another three in the first part of November.

The latest was on Monday afternoon around 2 o’clock when a man in his 30’s was shot dead while his female companion was rushed to the hospital for treatment after she was wounded by two unidentified armed men riding in tandem.

The incident took place in Purok Kalubihan in Barangay Daro where other shooting incidents were also reported previously.

“I asked him (Supt. Atanacio) to give me a profile of the victims,” Carlos said, adding he is still waiting for the city police chief to give feedback.

Sr. Supt. Carlos also admitted the need for the PNP to make a thorough review of its investigation and other crime procedures as not a single shooting incident has so far been solved.

Community support, cooperation and involvement in the solution of these cases is also critical, considering that police cannot move ahead with their investigation if potential witnesses, the victims or their families refuse to cooperate with authorities, he added. (PNA)
