OIC Provincial Police Director Sr. Supt. Dionardo Carlos has confirmed that the Philippine National Police in Negros Oriental received intelligence reports of the presence of armed individuals in the Province.
Sr. Superintendent Carlos, however, said the motive of the armed men is still not ascertained. They arrived here just recently, he added.
According to the Police Director, there are possibilities of the armed men being hired in relation to the upcoming 2016 elections.
The PNP here is currently reviewing the details and data of the reports received, said Sr. Supt. Carlos.
He admitted that the police have received names of such personalities, and that they are now the subject of further intelligence gathering.
The police are working to determine in which areas these armed men are located, and with whom they are affiliated.
Sr. Superintendent Carlos disclosed that the reports of the presence of armed groups in Negros Oriental have recently been discussed with Chief Supt. Prudencio Tom Bañas.
The Provincial Director also assured that currently, the armed groups do not necessarily pose a threat to security in the Province.
He warned, though, that if these individuals do create trouble or intend to disrupt or influence the security of the elections, the Police will certainly take the necessary steps to prevent them from succeeding. (PNA)
