Dumaguete City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria has asked the city council to appropriate P45,000 to buy cellphones for the barangays to beef up the campaign against illegal drugs.

In a Peace and Order Council meeting held recently, the local chief executive said the cellphones will strengthen the intelligence gathering capabilities of the barangays.

This can be an effective tool to get information on drug related activities through text messages with confidentiality, and at the same time enhance intelligence networking to prevent the proliferation of illegal drugs in the city,» Sagarbarria said.

Dumaguete City Chief of Police, PSUPT James Goforth reported during the meeting that part of their plans and programs for 2014 to improve the peace & order situation in the city is to conduct regular barangay outpost visitation.

He added the police will also coordinate closely with security providers and adopt punishment awards/rewards system. Goforth assured the CPOC members that the city PNP in coordination with PDEA will strengthen the campaign against illegal drugs.

Goforth reported that from January to December 2013 the police confiscated some 350 grams of shabu and apprehended 64 persons on various drug related activities. (PIA/Lindy Pagunsan)
