The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration is looking into a case of illegal recruitment filed by jobseekers against officials of the Public Employment Services Office in Negros Oriental and Cebu.
Commission on Human Rights Special Investigator Dr. Jesus Canete said he met with two lawyers from the POEA central office to discuss the case. Along with the two lawyers, whom he did not identify, was Love Joy Anino, representative of the complaining jobseekers.
Canete said he appraised the POEA officials, who were accompanied by POEA-7 regional director Evelia Durato, of the controversy involving the two heads of PESO.
The subject of the complaints are Grace Jamio of PESO Lapu-lapu City in Cebu province, and Ramon Benedicto of Negros Oriental. The case came about after several job applicants claimed that they paid P8,500 each through Benedicto for what turned out to be non-existent jobs in South Korea.
They said they were even made to undergo a six-week training in the Korean language.
Canete said Jamio has denied any wrongdoing as she blamed Benedicto for the mess. Benedicto has yet to issue his reply to the charges. (PNA)
