The Dumaguete Police has denied accusations that they have not lifted a finger to solve the spate of thieveries in the City.
Lt. Col. Gregorio Galsim made the denial amid reports that their attention was called by someone in Camp Crame, the national headquarters of the Philippine National Police, over the burglars who broke into the home of Mikel and Nadia Teves at Jocson Apartment, Ma. Asuncion Subd. in barangay Daro.
The May 30 incident was the third time for the Teves home to be burglarized.
Among the items carted away by the suspects were a gold necklace worth P30,000, two iPhone 6 cellphones, and cash.
Colonel Galsim denied the accusations of inaction on that particular incident, saying that the Theft & Robbery section immediately proceeded to the area in Daro, conducted follow up investigations with fingerprints lifted by scene-of-the-crime operatives, and intensified a patrol system in the area in coordination with barangay Daro officials.
He stressed that peace and order concerns are not the responsibility of the police alone, but that the police needs the cooperation of the community.
The police chief added that their records will show that a number of burglaries in Dumaguete have been solved but that the victims had refused to pursue cases against the suspects, as soon as the stolen items were recovered and returned to the owners.
Meanwhile, the Barangay Council of Daro headed by village chief Jovencio Tan Jr. admitted that incidents of thefts and burglaries in his area have reached an alarming rate, second to those happening in barangay Taclobo.
Tan said they have planned the establishment of additional tanod outposts within Asuncion Subd.
He added that they will call for another conference with its homeowners association to discuss the need of contributing a certain amount to fund the hiring of security guards to monitor the residences in Ma. Asuncion Subd. (Juancho Gallarde)
