Consumers in Negros Oriental now have a wider selection of Christmas hams and other pork by-products for the holidays following the easing of restrictions related to the African swine fever (ASF).

Dr. Alfonso Tundag, quarantine officer for the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) in the province, announced on Monday that suppliers can now ship Christmas hams and pork by-products to Negros Oriental as long as they meet the necessary requirements.

“Incoming deliveries from ASF-infected areas are now allowed but the supplier must first secure a certificate of acceptance from the Provincial Veterinary Office of Negros Oriental,” Tundag said.

He added there are additional requirements to be met or documents to be obtained from the point of origin.

Failure to present these documents upon arrival in the province will result in the confiscation of the shipment.

Previously, only one brand of Christmas ham (Virginia Food, Inc.), which is produced in Cebu, was allowed entry into Negros Oriental, as Cebu was declared ASF-free during the height of the ASF restrictions.

Tundag also shared that Negros Oriental Governor Manuel “Chaco” Sagarbarria issued an executive order earlier this year to relax the restrictions on border controls for live hogs and pork by-product suppliers. This move aims to minimize the impact of ASF on local businesses and ensure a steady supply of pork products for consumers during the holiday season. (Judy F. Partlow/PNA)
