We congratulate this year’s Galing Awardees (Aug. 28, MetroPost) given by Sillimanians in Metro Manila (SIMM), a registered chapter of the Silliman Alumni Association Inc.

Sillimanians who excel in their fields always deserve recognition, whether by alumni chapters, colleges, or peers.

The highest honor to be given to an alumnus remains the Outstanding Sillimanian Award (OSA) from Silliman University.

Since the OSA was first given in 1962, we have been faithful stewards of this prestigious award. The awards are not given willy-nilly. The selection involves a multi-layer process to review nominations, recommend potential awardees, and secure final approval from the SU Board of Trustees. It is a process that takes time and rigor, and involves many disinterested individuals in the process.

We welcome the concerns raised by SIMM regarding the rigor that we apply in the selection of Outstanding Sillimanian Awardees.

We continue to evolve the process in response to concerns from alumni, and to changing social conditions. Adhering to a rigorous process preserves the integrity of the Outstanding Sillimanian Awards.

We continue to invite nominations for qualified candidates who fulfill the requirements of this prestigious award.

We will also continue to be rigorous in selecting the awardees.

Yasmin M. Alih
President, SAAI
