In order to further improve the developmental plans of the Negros Oriental Tourism and to make the tourism industry more competitive and dynamic, the Dept. of Tourism of Region VII through the Regional Director Ms. Rowena Lu Montecillo together with its partners in tourism development in the province: the Negros Orietnal Provincial Government, Provincial Tourism Office, Negros Oriental Business Development Foundation (NOBDF), Negros Oriental Investment Promotion Center (NOIPC), the Dept. of Trade and Industry — Neg. Or. Prov’l. Office and the Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NOCCI) — AFOS WE CAN Program, joined forces to organize and facilitate the Value Chain Analysis for the tourism industry.

The activity is getting together all tourism stake holders, that is, the entire community (public and private tourism stakeholders), to get organized and ensure that the entire process can be mapped, identified, and properly addressed. This process, called a Value Chain, is the “sequence of activities required to produce a product or to provide a service”.

This approach is valuable in empowering all stake holders: the SMEs, actors, operators, and enablers. It introduces them to all the activities that can and should be carried out along the Value Chain, helps them see where they are located in it and their own “value” or importance in that Chain, helps them see obstacles or bottlenecks, and gives them the power to determine where priority attention is needed.

The tourism value chain analysis for Negros Oriental will be divided into five (5) different phases and will involve several activities for each of the phase. These activities will involve tourism orientation, value chain introduction and orientation, rapid area appraisal, destination appraisal, workshops and action planning, presentations, focus group discussion, meetings, brain storming sessions, cooperation mapping and creation of technical working group. The entire process will run for approximately 3-4 months and the output will be valuable and favorable to the development of the Negros Oriental tourism industry. (J. Jalandoni)
