How big is the drug problem in the country? By all indications, it seems to have gotten from bad to worse. President Rodrigo Duterte promised to solve it in six months from his assumption to office. But six months turned in to 12. And twelve months turned into 18. The drug problem has not lessened compared to when Duterte took over.
If you keep abreast with the news of the drug busts, the confiscated drugs even get bigger with each buy-bust operation. And not to forget, the biggest drug haul ever — the P6.4. billion Shabu smuggling case, whose ownership is still one big question mark until now.
In Negros Oriental, drug users and pushers still abound. Drug busts are in the news every now and then, some even involving barangay officials. One drug bust last week was estimated at P11 million.
Now, the police are back in the anti-drug operations and are now selecting key personnel to be trained specifically for this operation. This time, the police say the “TokHangers” shall be properly screened and will undergo training on how to carry out their mission of visiting pre-identified and validated drug personalities.
Quality not quantity.
Along this line, we hope that the Oplan Tokhang 2 would be less bloody than the first one.
A peaceful and drug-free society is everyone’s dream for Negros Oriental. And we can do it if we all remain vigilant and cooperative with authorities so they can be better guided in doing their jobs.
