Remembering graduation day

I’m now recalling Cat Stevens singing: I was once like you are now, and I know that it’s not easy to be calm when you’ve found something going on. But take your time, think a lot.Why think of everything you’ve got for you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not!

The lyrics depict exactly the thoughts of a parent, and those who have gone before you. On graduation day, the future is like a blank page, ready for you to write your own journey. Looking back, you struggled, hurdled challenges, and your dreams are coming into light.

The choices you make will determine the career path that will make your dream come true. What you have learned will always be your capital in your future undertaking. Remember the people who helped you along the way especially your parents and significant others who provided all forms of support.

Everything will be shining and new, these new beginnings are stepping stones to realizing your goals, and will open the doors to a new chapter, which include endeavors and challenges. How you face these new chapter, is all up to you!

You will be outside your comfort zones, and if you find yourself moving in a different direction, it will take a lot of courage, and probably a little prayer in your pocket. Feeling the fear of being unprepared is expected when reality sets in. Then your arsenal of learning will see you through, and this is the reason why you had to struggle all those years of academic study.

Remember: Success is not a destination but a journey! There will be failures, there will be highs and lows, but you will persevere, drawing from your reserved knowledge and faith in yourself.

Coming face to face with life’s battles, it is important to brace yourself with self confidence, and in the process, you will discover your reserved strengths.

Shown on Facebook is an image taken on the subway of Oscar awardee Meryl Streep, then 27 years old, laughing at a film producer who told her in the 1970s that she was too ugly to star in the movie King Kong. On her unofficial site, Streep tells young people not to be disillusioned by setbacks: “This was me on my way home from an audition for ‘King Kong’ where I was told I was too ‘ugly’ for the part. This was a pivotal moment for me. This one rogue opinion could derail my dreams of becoming an actress, or force me to pull myself up by the bootstraps and believe in myself. I took a deep breath and said, ‘I’m sorry you think I’m too ugly for your film but you’re just one opinion in a sea of thousands and I’m off to find a kinder tide.’ Today I have 18 Academy awards.”

There is no guarantee against failure, but how you will deal with these lows will determine your success. There’s no way to predict what lies ahead but then there is a time you will discover your true self. One day, think about what Michael Jackson was telling us in his song: I’m starting with the man in the mirror. I’m asking him to change his ways. And no message could have been any clearer if you want to make the world a better place. Take a look at yourself, and then make a change!

Remember graduation day! Congratulations and Godspeed!

Special congratulations to Silliman graduates, and to Clan Porgalinas (Engineering), Cloi Porgalinas (Business), and Jose Jello Cubelo (Law). Cheers!
