More and more Dumaguetenos are catching the running bug.

Inspired by the success of the Silliman Run 2010 in Cebu City last year, the Silliman University Alumni Association, Inc. will hold an 11-km run in Dumaguete , dubbed “Run to Educate,” on August 7.

Judge Rafael Crescencio Tan, SAAI president, said that this is one of three projects he is holding during his one-year term as head of the SAAI. “This activity, which will formally open the 2011 Founder’s Day celebration, is something that would make this year’s Founder’s Day interesting,” he said during the press conference marking the soft-launching of the Silliman Run 2011.

The Silliman Run 2011 will be spearheaded by the SU Cebu Alumni, who organized last year’s run.

SUCebu President Siegfried Sia said there are three open categories for the August 7 run. Aside from the 11-K for running enthusiasts and professionals, there will be a 5.5k for youth and young adults and a 1.1K for school children and elderly participants, who may choose to walk the entire route.

The run is designed for 11, 5.5 and 1.1 kilometers in commemoration of the 110th anniversary celebration of Silliman University.

The run will start and end at 5:30 a.m. at the Silliman Portals along Hibbard Avenue.

Interested runners may register at the SAAI office in Silliman Univeristy or may email sillimanrun2011@yahoo.com. To avail of discounted early registration fees, participants are encouraged to register before July 11 to pay only P300, P270 and P270 for the 11k, 5.5k and 1.1k categories, respectively.

Sia said the proceeds of the run will go to the scholarship program of SAAI and SUCebu, in line with the association’s objective of sending deserving students to study in Silliman University.

Ambassador Antonio Villamor Jr., alumni representative to the SU Board of Trustees, said after this event, they will organize a Silliman Run in every place in the country where Silliman alumni are located.

The SAAI has tapped running advocate Paultom Paras as race director. (Alex Pal)
