Second District Representative Manuel “Chiquiting” Sagarbarria lauded the country’s athletes who won the championship in the recent SEA Games.

In an interview Thursday, Sagarbarria said the Filipino athletes proved that we can achieve our goals through hard work and determination.

He said one of the reasons we won the championship is home court advantage. “We know the playing fields like the back of our hands and that gave us an edge,” he said.

He said it takes a lot of money to bring athletes abroad to train and compete. “In previous SEA Games held in other countries, we could not field a complete delegation and compete in all the events. But in the recently-concluded SEA Games, we were able to field players in all sports that were played, especially sporting events were we are good at.”

In Arnis, for instance, we got almost all the gold medals because Arnis is our national sport, he said.

Sagarbarria pledged to continue supporting athletes, in Negros Oriental, with the expansion of the 2nd District’s sports program down to the grassroots level. (Gene Turco)
