Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria has assured to work closely with newly elected and re-elected barangay officials of Dumaguete City, the capital of Negros Oriental, for the city’s growth and development.
The mayor said it is time to move forward now that the barangay election is over and everyone should buckle down to work.
Mayor Sagarbarria lauded the peaceful holding of the barangay polls on Monday, noting that except for minor problems, no major untoward incident was reported that day.
According to him, he and some staff were roving around during the barangay polls and was in close contact with the police chief of Dumaguete, Supt. James Goforth.
To the winners, the mayor extended his congratulations while for those who failed to get elected, he encouraged them to accept defeat as the people have spoken and chosen their leaders through their votes.
Following Monday’s polls, records with the Commission on Elections show that one incumbent barangay chairman and several barangay council members on their last term were edged out from their positions as they sought re-election.
Denie Sisneros of Barangay Bagacay lost to Vincent Perigua who returned to the post he had served until his final term.
Poblacion 2, Banilad, and Bantayan have new barangay chairmen, namely: Pedro Zuniega, Raul Bana, and Efren Teves, respectively.
Those who ran unopposed for the barangay chairman post are Leonil Banogon of Buñao, Ramil Cornelia of Pulantubig, Greg Oira of Candau-ay, Ricardo Valencia of Mangnao, Nelson Ablir of Poblacion 5 and Bernardo Sun Jr. of Barangay Pob. 6.
The rest of the City’s 30 barangays re-elected their punong barangay, while in Barangay Piapi, a close finish of just five votes allowed incumbent Tomasa Amor to retain the chairmanship over Jose Quitay, the former barangay captain. (PNA)
